Market Volatility Update - Staying Focused on the Long Term

You may have seen recent headlines about increased market volatility following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. While these developments have understandably unsettled markets in the short term, it’s important to keep them in perspective.

Historically, geopolitical events rarely have a lasting impact on long-term investment outcomes. Periods of uncertainty often lead to sharp but temporary market movements, particularly when investors are reacting to concerns around energy supply, inflation, and economic growth. While these short-term fluctuations can feel uncomfortable, they are a normal feature of investing.

Well constructed, diversified portfolios are intended to help smooth returns and reduce the impact of short-term market movements over time. History shows that markets often recover quickly once uncertainty eases, and those recoveries can occur before it feels comfortable to re-enter. Remaining focused on long-term objectives, rather than reacting to short-term noise, has consistently been key to achieving strong investment outcomes.

Over the past two decades, share markets have experienced multiple periods of significant volatility, including during major global events. Despite this, long-term investors who remained invested have historically been rewarded with strong returns. The risk of attempting to reduce exposure during periods like this is missing the recovery or relief rally, which can materially affect long-term results.

The chart above highlights the long-term growth of the Australian share market over the past 20 years, despite numerous periods of volatility and market corrections along the way.

While further market swings are possible in the near term, our focus remains on long-term strategy rather than short-term market movements. Volatility and uncertainty are part of the reason growth assets are able to deliver returns above cash and other defensive assets over time.

As always, if you have any concerns or would like to discuss your situation in more detail, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
